Giancarlo Stanton Strikeout Props

Did you know that New York Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton is on pace to break the MLB single-season strikeout record of 223? He had 47 strikeouts in his first 30 games, so he is on pace to strike out more than 250 times in 2018, which would shatter the record. Despite this fact, oddsmakers at BetDSI sportsbook don’t believe Stanton will break that dubious record.

Let’s look at some of the Stanton strikeout props available at BetDSI and also a few other strikeout props on the board at the sportsbook.

Giancarlo Stanton Leads MLB in Strikeouts for 2018 Regular Season
Yes +150
No -180

Did you know that Stanton actually doesn’t lead MLB in strikeouts? You probably thought that Stanton was the clear leader in terms of strikeouts, but that is not the case. Chicago’s Yoan Moncada went into Thursday’s game with 48 strikeouts, one more than Stanton’s total of 47. Not far behind those two players are Yoenis Cespedes who has 45 strikeouts. Other players with 40 or more strikeouts are Drew Robinson, Carlos Gomez, Aaron Judge, Trevor Story and Paul Goldschmidt.

The oddsmakers definitely know what is going on with this prop, as they made the No almost a 2-1 favorite. Betting the No seems to be the way to go considering Stanton has been getting a ton of press because of his strikeouts, yet he still doesn’t have the most strikeouts in the league.

Giancarlo Stanton Breaks MLB Single-Season Strikeout Record (223)
Yes +165
No -200

There could be some value in taking the Yes on this prop at +165. Keep in mind that Stanton doesn’t have to lead the league in strikeouts for this prop to cash; he just needs to finish the season with more than 223 strikeouts. Stanton has started to hit more home runs of late, but he still is striking out on a regular basis.

The only concern in backing the Yes on this prop is that Stanton gets hurt. Stanton played in 159 games last season with the Marlins but in the previous two seasons, he played in just 74 and 119 games respectively. Any type of serious injury would make the Yes prop a loser.

MLB Single-Season Strikeout Record (223) is Broken in 2018
Yes -130
No +100

The value on this prop seems to be on the Yes, as a number of players are on pace to break the single-season strikeout record. If it was just one or two players, then there wouldn’t be as much value, but a number of players could end up breaking the all-time record for strikeouts in a season and we just need one player to break the mark for the Yes to cash.

Major League Baseball has seen a record number of home runs hit, as there were 6,105 home runs hit last season and strikeouts have risen along with the home runs. Pitchers are throwing up in the zone more often, but batters continue to go with the all or nothing approach. “Obviously, more velocity in the game, more guys attacking the top of the strike zone,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said recently to the media.

Total MLB Strikeouts During 2018 Regular Season
Over 41,500 (-150)
Under 41,500 (+120)

The over is favored in this prop, which makes sense considering there were more strikeouts in April than hits. It was the first month in MLB history in which there were more strikeouts than hits. MLB has had more strikeouts every single season for the last 10 years. There were 40,104 strikeouts last season and that number seems certain to be bypassed this season. MLB is all about home runs and strikeouts and that doesn’t seem to be changing. In fact, it has gotten worse, as batters simply swing for the fences and don’t care about striking out.

Oddsmakers have made the Over favored in this prop and that makes total sense. If you look at the pace for strikeouts this season, the number is more than 43,000. There is no question April was a huge month for strikeouts, but why will upcoming months be any different? The only way to bet this prop is to take the over.
